DOE opens $25M funding opportunity to support Tribal clean energy projects

The U.S. DOE has opened a funding opportunity making up to $25 million available to support clean energy technology deployment on Tribal lands. Projects fueled by biomass, biogas, RNG or renewable hydrogen are among those eligible for the funding.

U.S. production capacity for renewable diesel and associated fuels grew by 1.25 billion gallons per year between Jan. 1, 2022, and Jan. 1, 2023, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration in August.

The USDA on Aug. 30 awarded $266 million to 1,334 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects under the Rural Energy for America Program. Biofuel, biobased power, biogas and wood pellet projects are among those that will benefit from the funding.

Bioenergy Devco announced on Sept. 6 that it has received permitting approval for construction of its organics recycling facility at its Bioenergy Innovation Center in Seaford, Delaware. The project will convert food waste into RNG.

The U.S. exported 651,698.8 metric tons of wood pellets in July, down from 865,995.4 metric tons the previous month, but up slightly when compared to the 651.104 metric tons exported in July 2022, according to data released by the USDA on Sept. 6.

Technip Energies on Aug. 29 announced it has been awarded a contract to supply a hydrogen production unit to bp's proposed sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel conversion project at its Kwinana refinery in Western Australia.

The U.K. government on Sept. 4 announced plans to introduce a revenue certainty mechanism to support domestic SAF production. The initiative aims to bolster the development of SAF and drive further investment in SAF projects.

U.S. operable biofuels capacity was up in June, with gains for both ethanol and renewable diesel and associated fuels, according to data released by the U.S. EIA on Aug. 31. Feedstock consumption was also up during the month.

The European Union consumed a record 24.8 million metric tons of wood pellets in 2022, according to a report filed with the USDA FAS's Global Agricultural Information Network. Consumption is expected to grow to 25.6 million metric tons this year.

Idemitsu Kosan, a Japanese petroleum company, and LOPS Corp., a Japan-based trading company that supplies oil and fats, on Aug. 24 announced plans to conduct a joint study focused on the procurement of feedstocks for SAF production.
