Cellulosic biofuel, cellulosic diesel RINs generated in September

By Erin Voegele | October 28, 2013

The U.S. EPA has published new renewable fuel standard (RFS) compliance data, showing that both D3 cellulosic biofuel and D7 cellulosic diesel renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated in September.

According to EPA data, 87,383 D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in in September, representing 58,557 gallons of fuel. An additional 123,940 D7 cellulosic diesel RIN were generated during the month for 72,906 gallons of fuel. During the first nine months of the year, a total of 217,569 D3 RINs and 209,253 D7 RINs have been generated on a net basis. All cellulosic RINs generated this year have been generated by domestic producers. Information published by the EPA attributes all D3 RINs generated this year to cellulosic gasoline production, and all D7 RINs to cellulosic diesel.

Approximately 65.4 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in September for 59.64 million gallons of fuel, bringing the year-to-date generation to 472.18 million D5 RINs, on a net basis. The vast majority, 406.68 million, have been generated for ethanol production. However, 18.23 million D5 RINs were generated for biogas during the first nine months of the year. EPA data also notes that nearly 49.98 million D5 RINs were generated for non-ester renewable diesel. Approximately 84.03 million D5 RINs were generated domestically, with 389.8 million generated by importers.

More than 1.11 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in September, bringing the net total for the first nine months of the year to nearly 9.75 billion. The vast majority, nearly 9.62 billion, were generated for ethanol production, with 19.22 million generated for biodiesel, 947,663 for naptha, and 123 million for renewable diesel. Nearly 9.62 billion D6 RINs were generated by domestic producers. Approximately 18.47 million were generated by importers, and 123 million by foreign producers.

In addition, 255.91 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in September. The net total for the first nine months of the year is 1.86 billion RINs. Approximately 1.58 billion RINs were generated for biodiesel production, along with 281.15 million for non-ester renewable diesel. About 1.53 billion D4 RINs were generated domestically, with 148.66 million generated by importers and 187.47 million generated by foreign producers.

The U.S. EPA estimates there are currently 392.97 million locked and 11.51 billion unlocked RINS available.

Additional data on 2013 RINs is available on the EPA website.
