KiOR, Dynamic Fuels achieve EPA registrations

KiOR Inc. and Dynamic Fuels LLC are working to put advanced and cellulosic RINs into the marketplace. The two companies were recently granted additional biofuels registrations by the U.S. EPA for their respective fuel outputs.

On August 17, Syntroleum Corp. announced that Dynamic Fuels was granted Part 79 registration for its renewable gasoline by the EPA. The designation enables the company to generate 1.5 advanced biofuel—or D5—renewable identification numbers (RINs) of each gallon of its renewable gasoline blendstock when blended into petroleum gasoline at up to a 10 percent concentration.

According to information released by Syntroleum, Dynamic Fuels’s 75 MMgy facility is expected to produce approximately 7.5 million gallons of renewable gasoline each year, which equates to 11.25 million D5 RINs for drop-in gasoline production.

The company also noted that this is the third time Dynamic Fuels has successfully achieved EPA Part 79 registration for drop-in advanced biofuels. A Part 79 renewable diesel blendstock for blends of up to 20 percent was granted by the EPA in 2009. The company also achieved Part 79 registration for renewable diesel used in blends of up to 100 percent in 2011.

One day prior to the Dynamic Fuels announcement, KiOR announced that it had been granted Part 79 registration for its renewable diesel production. This is the second such registration the company has been granted this summer. In July, KiOR announced it had achieved registration for its cellulosic gasoline.

“With registration for both our cellulosic gasoline and diesel completed, KiOR now has a clear path to market to provide renewable cellulosic fuels for American cars and trucks during the fourth quarter of this year,” said Fred Cannon, KiOR’s president and CEO. “We are excited that KiOR will be able to play a key role in helping to fulfill the goals of the Renewable Fuels Standard by providing a truly renewable fuel option that uses only sustainable non-food feedstock, reduces greenhouse gases, creates American jobs, and reduces our dependence on imported oil.”
