On May 23, the democratic leadership of the U.S. Senate sent a letter to President Donald Trump urging him to take action to lower gas prices ahead of Memorial Day weekend. One suggested action is to protect the Renewable Fuel Standard.

In the letter, Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.; Maria Cantwell, D-Wash.; Bob Menendez, D-N.J.; and Ed Markey, D-Mass., outline several specific actions Trump could take immediately to lower gas prices. While several of the suggestions focus on action that can be taken with regard to oil producing nations and oil imports, the senators also make two specific suggestions related to the RFS and fuel economy standards.

Within the letter, the senators call on Trump to “maximize the use of more environmentally friendly and domestically produced biofuel alternative by protecting the Renewable Fuel Standard.” They also ask Trump to “abandon your administration’s stated plan to roll back fuel economy standards that otherwise will save the average car owner more than $6,000 over the life of the car and cut the nation’s oil consumption by over 2 million barrels per day by 2025.”
