The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for August, reporting that nearly 1.76 billion RINs were generated during the month, including nearly 20.4 million cellulosic RINs.

More than 20.11 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in August, bringing the net total for the first eight months of the year to 135.24 million. So far this year, 4.78 million D3 RINs have been generated for ethanol, with 82.12 million generated for renewable compressed natural gas (CNG) and 48.37 million for renewable liquefied natural gas (LNG). More than 118.43 million D3 RIN have been generated domestically, with 16.84 million generated by importers.

According to the EPA, 282,632 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in August, bringing the net total for the first eight months of the year to 963,050. So far this year, all D7 RINs have been generated for cellulosic heating oil by importers.

Nearly 28.18 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in August, bringing the net total for the first eight months of the year to 85.44 million. Nearly 58.91 million D5 RINs have been generated for ethanol, with 19.87 million generated for naptha, 1.13 million generated for heating oil, 5.6 million generated for nonester renewable diesel, and 22,034 generated for renewable CNG. So far this year 43.8 million D5 RINs have been generated domestically, with 41.73 million generated by importers.

Nearly 1.33 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in August, bringing the net total for the first eight months of the year to just under 10 billion. Most, 9.84 billion, have been generated for ethanol, with 170.09 million generated for nonester renewable diesel. More than 9.83 billion D6 RINs have been generated domestically, with 8.3 million generated by importers and 170.09 million generated by foreign entities.

Nearly 380.53 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in August, bringing the net total for the first eight months of the year to 2.47 billion. The majority, 1.98 billion, were generated for biodiesel, with 500.05 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 1.83 million generated for renewable jet fuel. More than 1.74 billion D4 RINs were generated domestically, with 512.65 million generated by importers and 229.94 million generated by foreign entities.

As of the close of August, the EPA estimates nearly 12.72 billion RINs have been generated so far this year, with 437.85 million retired, 397.28 million locked and available and 11.88 billion unlocked and available.
