Wood waste to power Florida homes

Progress Energy Florida has contracted with Atlanta-based Biomass Gas & Electric LLC to purchase electricity produced from gasified wood waste at two identical power plants to be built in Florida. Sites and regulatory permission are pending. Progress Energy Florida spokeswoman Cherie Jacobs said each plant will generate 75 megawatts of electricity-enough to power 46,000 homes-using materials such as tree bark, yard trimmings and paper mill jetsam. Commercial production at both facilities is slated for 2011.
