The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for May, reporting that nearly 1.5 billion RINs were generated during the month, including more than 9.51 million cellulosic RINs. According to EPA data, D7 cellulosic RINs were generated for the first time since October.

Nearly 9.34 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 36.9 million. Approximately 688,940 D3 RINs were generated for ethanol, with 19.34 million generated for renewable compressed natural gas and 16.98 million for renewable liquefied natural gas. To date, all D3 RINs generated this year have been generated by domestic producers.

EPA data indicates 173,731 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in May, all for cellulosic heating oil. May was the first month of this year in which D7 RINs were generated. All 173,371 D7 RINs were generated by importers.

More than 4.7 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to nearly 34.73 million. So far this year, 20.53 million D5 RINs have been generated for ethanol, with 10.22 million generated for naptha, 318,897 generated for heating oil, 3.67 million generated for nonester renewable diesel, and 1,686 generated for renewable compressed natural gas. During the first five months of the year, 24.03 million D5 RINs were generated by domestic producers, with 10.7 million generated by importers.

More than 1.22 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 5.99 billion. The majority, 5.82 billion, were generated for ethanol, with 25.65 million generated for biodiesel and 141.89 million generated for nonester renewable diesel. To date this year, 5.82 billion D5 RINs have been generated by domestic producers, with 26.82 million generated by importers and 141.89 million generated by foreign entities.

According to the EPA, 260.94 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 954.77 million. Most, 730.74 million, were generated for biodiesel, with 224.63 million generated for nonester renewable diesel. More than 787.37 million D4 RINs were generated by domestic producers, with 73.03 million generated by importers and 34.97 million generated by foreign entities.

As of the end of May, the EPA estimates nearly 7.02 billion RINs have been generated so far this year, with 223.97 million retired, 256.25 million locked and available and 6.54 billion unlocked and available.
