Georgia Power signs biomass PPA

By Anna Simet | May 15, 2013

Southern Company’s largest subsidiary, Georgia Power, has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Rollcast Energy Inc. for 53.5 MW generated at Piedmont Green Power Plant.

The plant, which began commercial operations toward the end of April, took two years to construct. Zachry Industrial, Inc., a subsidiary of Zachry Holdings, was the engineering, procurement and construction contractor. Delta Power Services, a subsidiary of Babcock & Wilcox, is providing operations and maintenance services.

The facility is situated on a 50-acre site in the town of Barnesville in central Georgia, about 70 miles southeast of Atlanta. It uses woody biomass for fuel—about 500,000 tons annually— sourced from logging areas and land clearings, and generates enough electricity to power more than 35,000 homes.

It is Rollcast Energy’s first greenfield biomass project.

Per the 20-year PPA, Rollcast will retain all renewable energy credits earned through the state’s renewable portfolio standard.
