Two energy companies to cogasify using biomass

St. Louis-based Peabody Energy announced in late January its intent to become a minority investor in GreatPoint Energy Inc. The two companies are commercializing a proprietary gasification process using biomass.

A Peabody spokesman said the two companies will look at a variety of feedstock options, including poplars, switchgrass, corn stover, bagasse and municipal solid waste. They are experimenting with how much biomass will make the perfect mix with coal or petroleum coke, and the percent eventually used will be a project-specific determination, Peabody said.
